Round 6 Review
The battle for the title as Mareeba Karting Club 2009 Champion is truly heating up with just two rounds left two run in what has been a series full of surprises. The most notable battle is shaping up under the Junior Light category where the points lead is shared by three different drivers, with fourth position only trailing by ten points. Harry Adams has joined consistant performers Michael Curcio and Holly McMullen on top of the table after a hard fought victory in round 6. Adams carries strong form into the final two rounds but is closely chased by Curcio who has found good pace in the last couple of outings. Max Roesler continued to consistently score and sits in fourth position in the championship and is not yet out of the battle.
Brodie Davis continued his domination in the Midgets Class with another win to add to his tally. Davis sits comfortably on top of the table. Sethryn Smith sits second on the ladder and has a health margin over third placed Travis Andres who will continue to push hard to catch Smith. The Rookies standings although is a lot closer with just 5 points separating first to third. Cairns racer Jimmy Croul continued his strong speed in round six to take the victory and the lead of the championship over defending champion Hayden McMullen and third place Aussie Pell, both of whom have shown great pace throughout the year and really need to push into the final rounds.
Consistency has helped Amie Rootsey and Leanne Peard to the top of the table in the Junior Heavy class. Rootsey has a 4 point lead over Peard and the pair have been close all year. The girls lead although is being threatened by the sheer pace of third placed Josh Lennon, who has won from every start but has been unable to race each round due to commitments in cairns. Lennon continues to hunt down the leaders and a bad round from each could see him leap to the lead.
Early championship favourite Leigh Naylor has been dealt a harsh hand in pursuit of his second Junior Clubman title. Naylor’s championship defence has been hindered by failures and injuries and now trails younger brother Mitchell by 11 points with two rounds to go. Mitchell has taken advantage of Leigh’s situation to build a strong points advantage over him, although a slip up from Mitchell could see Leigh close the tally considerably. Atherton driver Fred Barletta has continued his consistent results to sit third in the standings with a healthy margin over Cairns racer Daniel Roser, last year’s runner up. Kevin Barnes sits atop the Clubman Heavy standings after a strong season but needs to finish highly in the remaining races to secure is victory. Barnes leads Cairns’ John Peterson and Mareeba’s James McConnel who are separated by one point in their battle for second.
After 6 of the 8 championship races for the 2009 season, it is clear that it is not over until the end with many drivers hoping for a last gasp effort to improve their positions. With over 50 different racers taking part in the 2009 Championship Series, and over 40 in the pre-season championship, the Mareeba Karting Club has had a strong second season since its incorporation and looks forward to the exciting racing which is to come before the trophies are handed over to our new champions.
